5 Ways to Take Better Care of Yourself Around the Holidays

Ahhh, 'tis the season for chaos. Does anyone else have a love/hate relationship with the holidays?

On the one hand, OMG I love that all of the holidays this time of year are stacked one on top of the other—Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, right in a row—what could be better? On the other hand, holy exhaustion. It's tempting to say "yes!" to everything, from holiday parties to cocktail hours with your co-workers and more. Plus, with weekends full of fun things like shopping for everyone on your list, traveling, and decorating the house, there's rarely a minute for downtime in the coming months.

Why self-care is so important

I am bad at taking care of myself—I know this. I have a really hard time taking a step back and admitting that I need some alone time, and will burn out really quickly if I don't slow down and reset from time to time. But it's really important to take a few seconds for yourself and boost up your self-care regime for your sanity and health.

Here are five ways to take better care of yourself:

One // Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

It feels like this time of year, the alcohol and sugary treats are flowing a bit more than usual. I have a water bottle glued to my hip at pretty much all times to counteract all of the excess and I try to drink at least 100 ounces of water a day.

To get into the habit of drinking this much water, get a cute water bottle! It sounds silly, but it's what has worked for me. Here are some of my favorites:

Two // Get your sleep

No, seriously: you need to be getting more sleep. I try to get eight hours of sleep each night. I typically go to bed around 11 PM and get up at 7 AM. I know with crazy holiday schedules and nights out it can be hard to actually log eight hours a night, but make it a priority to get into bed early when you can, and save the Stranger Things binge-watching for the weekend day, rather than a Tuesday night at 1 AM. Trust me—you'll thank yourself later.

Three // Take your vitamins

Why not start your New Year's Resolution to "be healthier" (come on, you know that's going to be on your list) early and start doing something super easy to take better care of yourself—take your vitamins! I love services like Care/Of that help you figure out which vitamins you should be taking, and make it easy (and kind of fun!) to take your vitamins every day.

Four // Take better care of your skin

My skin is fairly normal, but I always feel like everything is drier in the winter months. I try to bump up my skincare routine a bit by making little changes, like using restorative face masks, an extra thick nighttime moisturizer, and doubling up on washing my face more often, especially if I wear heavy makeup for a night out.

And, it should go without saying, but make sure you're always at least washing your face and hydrating your skin every night, regardless of how busy you get.

Five // Find quiet time

It's really important to take a second or two in silence. Odds are, when you're home and relaxing, you're probably listening to the TV, on your phone or computer, or talking to someone. When was the last time you literally just sat in silence? Or, if that scares you, try a guided meditation. I really like Headspace. Even if you can get in a few minutes a day of sitting, breathing, and calming down, it's worth it.
