Women at Work: How to Focus + Find Your Flow


I go through ebbs and flows at work. Sometimes I'm so tuned in and obsessed with my work to the point where I'm so productive and knock everything off my to-do list, day after day. Others, I struggle to find motivation and feel burnt out.

Over the past few years, I've found a few tips and tricks that work really well for me to focus and find my flow on my less motivated days:

build the ideal work environment for you

Think about where you work best. Is it at your desk, on a couch, at a standing desk, or at home? As much as you can, try to build the ideal work environment for your working style so that you are set up for success from the get-go.

get the essentials around you

Computer is an obvious one here, but what else do you need for a productive work day? My work essentials include:

  • water

  • noise cancelling headphones

  • notepad + pen + highlighter

  • post-it notes

  • chargers

If you have all of your essentials around you, you won't have to get up and interrupt your work day for these must-haves.

prep a power playlist

When I put on certain playlist of mine, I feel like I can conquer anything. Music always helps me get lost in my work and find my flow.

learn how to take a break—and when

This is one that I'm constantly working to improve upon—sometimes I get so wrapped up in my work that I don't look up from my desk for hours, and I realize I haven't eaten and need to pee and am seeing stars from how hard I've stared at my computer screen. But in order to keep your stamina going all day long at work and to feel re-energized, you need to get up from time to time, take a breath, maybe take a walk, and break for a bit.
